Practical overview
When it fits
Use Airllm when local or self-hosted model inference is required and GPU memory is the main constraint. It is especially relevant for testing large models without relying on a hosted inference service.
Who it is for
- Developers running large language models on constrained local GPU hardware
- Researchers building self-hosted inference or evaluation environments
- Practitioners exploring model fine-tuning and LoRA with limited VRAM
Documented uses
- Run large language models locally when the full model does not fit in available GPU memory
- Create a self-hosted inference environment from a model repository or local checkpoint
- Experiment with supported model families and memory-saving configurations
- Explore documented fine-tuning and LoRA workflows on constrained hardware
Requirements & limits
The repository is publicly accessible and identifies Airllm as open source under the Apache-2.0 license. Installation is documented through pip.
- Layer-wise loading targets GPU-memory reduction for large models.
- The documented workflow accepts either a Hugging Face repository ID or a local model path.
- The repository lists CPU inference and macOS support in addition to GPU use.
- Model-specific requirements can differ; recent examples mention particular Transformers, CUDA, flash-attn and checkpoint-storage requirements.
- Quantization is supported in the repository documentation, but the headline 70B example is described without quantization.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Airllm and prepare a model for inference
Install the library and initialize a supported model from Hugging Face or a local path.
Before you start
- Python package installation with pip
- A Hugging Face model repository ID or local model path
- GPU, CPU or macOS environment supported by the repository documentation
Steps
Install Airllm with pip install airllm.
Import AutoModel from airllm.
Call AutoModel.from_pretrained with the selected Hugging Face repository ID or local model path.
Use the initialized model in an inference workflow similar to a regular Transformer model.
Expected outcome
An Airllm model object is initialized for the documented inference workflow.
Guide limitations
- The repository does not establish that every model works with every hardware configuration.
- Memory use and additional dependencies vary by model and configuration.

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airllm | Run large language models locally when the full model does not fit in available GPU memory | Linux, macOS, Self-hosted, Windows | The repository is publicly accessible and identifies Airllm as open source under the Apache-2.0 license. Installation is documented through pip. |
