Practical overview
When it fits
Use Metagpt when a task benefits from several specialized GPT roles working through a coordinated workflow, especially software generation, planning or documented data-analysis examples.
Who it is for
- Developers building multi-agent applications
- Teams prototyping natural-language software planning and implementation
- Researchers and engineers adapting role-based agent coordination to domain-specific tasks
Documented uses
- Turn a short software requirement into planning and development artifacts
- Generate a software repository through coordinated agent roles
- Run documented data-analysis workflows with the Data Interpreter example
- Prototype specialized multi-agent pipelines
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. It is presented for CLI or self-hosted use and requires a local Python environment, Node.js, pnpm and configured LLM access for the documented workflows.
- Python version support is specified as 3.9 or later and below 3.12.
- Node.js and pnpm are required before actual use.
- The framework supports both CLI invocation and a Python library interface.
- LLM provider configuration is required through
config2.yaml. - The role-based structure is more relevant to coordinated workflows than to a single-agent prompt.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metagpt | Turn a short software requirement into planning and development artifacts | CLI, Self-hosted | The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. It is presented for CLI or self-hosted use and requires a local Python environment, Node.js, pnpm and configured LLM access for the documented workflows. |
| Massgen | Run multiple AI agents against the same user task. | CLI | The repository documents installation through pip or uv and requires Python 3.11 or later. Setup can configure API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI; credentials are needed for the selected model backends. |
| Langchain Multi Agents Boilerplate | Route incoming football questions to model and agent workflows according to task complexity. | Web | The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. Running the application requires OpenAI and Groq API keys and a Redis server. |
