Practical overview
When it fits
Use Cometbft when an application needs replicated state-machine consensus across multiple machines and the development team wants to keep the application state machine separate from the consensus middleware.
Who it is for
- Blockchain engineers building replicated applications.
- Cosmos ecosystem developers needing a consensus layer.
- Teams creating self-hosted or permissioned distributed systems.
Documented uses
- Replicate a deterministic application state machine across machines.
- Provide Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus for a blockchain network.
- Create a Cosmos-compatible consensus layer.
- Run a self-hosted distributed state replication component.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available as open-source software under the Apache-2.0 license. The documented deployment model includes self-hosted command-line and server environments.
- The application state machine must be deterministic for replicated execution.
- Cometbft is written in Go, while the replicated application state machine can be written in any programming language.
- ABCI++ enables customization at every step of the consensus engine.
- The repository documents single-node and Docker Compose local-start paths.
- Production users should select a release; the project warns that minor-version upgrades can break existing blockchain compatibility.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a local Cometbft development environment
Install Cometbft and prepare either a single-node setup or a local Docker Compose cluster.
Before you start
- Go 1.26.6 or higher when working from the main branch, or Go 1.22 or higher for the v0.38.x line.
- A release rather than the main branch for production use.
- The Cometbft repository and its installation and quick-start documentation.
Steps
Follow the Cometbft installation guide.
Choose the documented single-node quick start or the local Docker Compose cluster guide.
Use a released version for production-oriented work instead of depending on main.
Expected outcome
A documented local starting point for working with Cometbft as a consensus component.
Guide limitations
- The supplied documentation describes setup paths but does not provide an application-specific state machine implementation.
- Minor-version upgrades can introduce breaking changes and may require a new blockchain or custom data migration.
