Chain Core

Chain Core is Go software for operating and connecting to permissioned blockchain networks conforming to the Chain Protocol. It maintains a cryptographically secured transaction log and a shared multi-asset ledger in which participants can define, issue and transfer digital assets.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a project needs self-hosted Chain Protocol infrastructure for shared digital-asset records, participant connectivity or local development and prototyping.

Who it is for

  • Organizations building permissioned blockchain infrastructure
  • Teams managing institutional digital-asset ledgers
  • Developers learning the Chain Protocol or building prototypes
  • Network participants that need to connect to a Chain Protocol blockchain

Documented uses

  • Operate a permissioned blockchain network
  • Maintain and validate a shared multi-asset ledger
  • Issue and transfer represented units of value
  • Connect participants to an existing Chain Protocol network
  • Build and experiment with local Chain Core deployments

Requirements & limits

The repository describes Chain Core Developer Edition as free to download and open source under AGPL-3.0. It documents local operation on Mac, Windows and Linux, while the technical profile identifies Linux and server self-hosting as the infrastructure context.

  • Chain Protocol conformity is central to the network model.
  • The design uses trusted issuers for represented units of value and a federation of block signers for ledger consistency.
  • Source builds require an older documented Go toolchain, PostgreSQL and additional build dependencies when applicable.
  • The repository separates the cored daemon and API server from the corectl control utility.
  • The README identifies the main branch as unstable and recommends building from a specific tag.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and start Chain Core from source

Create the documented Chain Core binaries, prepare a PostgreSQL database and start the local daemon.

Before you start

  • Go 1.8 with GOPATH configured
  • PostgreSQL and its command-line tools
  • protoc 3.1.0, protoc-gen-go and CMake 3.4 or later when required
  • A checked-out Chain Core source tree and a selected Git ref

Steps

  1. Set the CHAIN environment variable to the source repository root and add the repository and Go binary directories to PATH.

  2. Clone the repository to the configured CHAIN path and change into that directory.

  3. Run build-cored-release with a Chain repository ref and output directory to create cored and corectl.

  4. Create the PostgreSQL database named core.

  5. Start cored; the documented local dashboard address is http://localhost:1999/.

Expected outcome

A locally built Chain Core daemon and control utility, with the daemon started against the prepared database.

Guide limitations

  • The README says the main branch is not considered stable and recommends checking out a specific tag before building.
  • The documented build product enables HTTP connections, unauthenticated localhost requests and the ability to reset Chain Core; these settings should be treated as development-oriented configuration.
