Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a visible, local demonstration is more useful than a production blockchain implementation, especially for lessons or introductory experiments.
Who it is for
- Blockchain beginners
- Teachers and classroom instructors
- Developers creating local blockchain learning or experimentation environments
Documented uses
- Illustrate how linked ledger data behaves when block contents change.
- Show how hashing relates blocks in an immutable-ledger model.
- Experiment with proof-of-work difficulty and mining effort.
- Provide a local companion to public/private key instruction.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented local setup uses Node.js or Docker and serves the demonstration at http://localhost:3000.
- Node.js setup requires installing dependencies before starting the server.
- Docker Compose provides a separate documented startup path.
- Proof-of-work difficulty is configurable in public/javascripts/blockchain.js.
- Increasing difficulty above four can cause the bundled signed-block examples to display as not mined because their data assumes four zeros.
- The repository points to a separate public/private key demonstration for the related key concepts.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Blockchain Demo with Node.js
Run the browser-based blockchain demonstration locally.
Before you start
- Git
- Node.js
- A web browser
Steps
Clone https://github.com/anders94/blockchain-demo.git.
Change into the blockchain-demo directory and run npm install.
Start the server with npm start, ./bin/www, or node ./bin/www on Windows when needed.
Open http://localhost:3000 in a web browser.
Expected outcome
The local browser demonstration is available at http://localhost:3000.
Guide limitations
- The README documents setup and access, but does not document a production deployment or network configuration.
Set up Blockchain Demo with Docker
Start the demonstration using the repository’s Docker setup.
Before you start
- Git
- Docker and Docker Compose
- A web browser
Steps
Clone https://github.com/anders94/blockchain-demo.git.
Change into the blockchain-demo directory.
Run docker-compose up -d.
Open http://localhost:3000 in a web browser.
Expected outcome
The Docker-started demonstration is available at http://localhost:3000.
Guide limitations
- The evidence documents the Docker startup command but does not specify container configuration or deployment targets.
