Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use InsForge when an AI coding workflow needs backend services and operational context in addition to code generation, particularly when MCP integration or self-hosting matters.

Who it is for

  • Developers building full-stack applications with coding agents
  • Teams that need agent-accessible backend provisioning and runtime context
  • Builders considering cloud-hosted or self-hosted agent infrastructure

Documented uses

  • Expose backend operations as tools for an MCP-compatible coding agent
  • Provision and manage authentication, database, storage and edge-function resources
  • Provide agents with schemas, metadata and runtime logs for implementation and debugging
  • Support applications using PostgreSQL and vector-oriented data capabilities
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository documents cloud hosting through insforge.dev and self-hosting with Docker Compose v2. It identifies the project as open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

  • Choose MCP when the coding agent must call InsForge operations through a compatible tool interface.
  • Choose the cloud CLI plus Skills path when using the documented cloud-only interface.
  • Consider self-hosting when control over the deployment environment is required and Docker Compose v2 is available.
  • Treat compute as a private-preview component according to the repository description.
  • The PostgreSQL, pgvector, embeddings and real-time references are repository metadata; the supplied material does not include an implementation example.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare a self-hosted InsForge stack

Generate the local configuration and secrets required for the documented Docker Compose setup.

Before you start

  • Docker with Compose v2
  • A shell environment capable of running the repository setup command

Steps

  1. Run the repository’s setup script with a target directory such as ~/insforge.

  2. Allow the script to fetch the stack files and generate JWT_SECRET, ENCRYPTION_KEY, POSTGRES_PASSWORD, ROOT_ADMIN_PASSWORD and access keys.

  3. Use the generated ~/insforge/.env file as the configuration produced by setup; the documented setup step does not start the stack.

Expected outcome

A local InsForge directory with fetched stack files and generated environment values, ready for the next documented self-hosting stage.

Guide limitations

  • The supplied setup instructions stop before starting the stack.
  • No execution result or compatibility guarantee is established by these instructions.
COMPARE OPTIONS
