Practical overview
When it fits
Use Vaex when interactive analysis or preprocessing involves tabular data that is costly to load fully into memory, and when a Python-based, lazy DataFrame workflow is appropriate.
Who it is for
- Python developers working with large tabular datasets
- Data scientists building exploration, profiling or statistical workflows
- Teams developing Jupyter or Voilà data interfaces
- Machine-learning practitioners preparing features from data that may exceed in-memory capacity
Documented uses
- Open and explore large HDF5 or Apache Arrow datasets through memory mapping
- Convert or work with data from CSV files, Pandas DataFrames and other sources
- Apply lazy expressions and filters without copying the full dataset into memory
- Calculate statistics, groupby aggregations and joins on large tables
- Create histograms, density plots and 3D volume visualizations
Requirements & limits
Vaex is presented as a public, MIT-licensed Python repository. The supplied repository documents installation with pip or conda and lists Windows, Linux and macOS as supported platforms.
- The workflow is library-based and requires a Python environment rather than a hosted application account.
- HDF5 and Apache Arrow are documented for direct large-file handling through memory mapping.
- Lazy evaluation can defer transformations and reduce unnecessary in-memory copies.
- Jupyter and Voilà integration is documented for interactive notebooks and dashboards.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
