Practical overview
When it fits
Use BentoML when an AI model or application needs a customizable serving layer rather than only an isolated model runtime, especially when API exposure, batching, queued jobs or multi-model composition is part of the requirement.
Who it is for
- ML engineers exposing custom or open-source models through APIs
- Developers building LLM applications or queued AI jobs
- Teams assembling multi-model inference pipelines
- Builders packaging model-serving backends for Docker or BentoCloud deployment
Documented uses
- Turn model inference code into a REST API
- Serve LLM, vision, audio, embedding or other AI workloads
- Combine multiple models into a serving pipeline
- Package code, models and dependencies into a Bento artifact
- Run an AI service locally or deploy it through Docker or BentoCloud
Requirements & limits
BentoML is available as a public Apache-2.0 Python repository. The documented BentoCloud workflow requires signup and an API token; local use and Docker packaging are described separately.
- Python 3.9 or newer is required.
- The framework supports any ML framework, modality and inference runtime according to the project documentation.
- Dynamic batching, model parallelism, multi-stage pipelines and multi-model orchestration are documented serving options.
- Additional dependencies are required for each model; the example installs PyTorch and Transformers.
- Docker is needed for the documented containerization workflow.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run a Python model service locally
Create and serve a summarization inference API on a local BentoML server.
Before you start
- Python 3.9 or newer
- BentoML installed with pip
- PyTorch and Transformers installed in the Python environment
- A service.py file containing the documented Summarization service
Steps
Install BentoML with pip install -U bentoml.
Install the example model dependencies with pip install torch transformers.
Define the Summarization service and its batchable summarize API in service.py.
Run bentoml serve.
Call the service at the default local address with a browser or BentoML SyncHTTPClient.
Expected outcome
The example service listens on http://localhost:3000 and accepts summarization inference requests.
Guide limitations
- The recipe covers local serving of the documented summarization example; model-specific dependencies remain necessary.
- The default local address is documented for this example and does not establish production deployment suitability.
Package the service as a Docker image
Build a Bento artifact and create a Docker image for the documented summarization service.
Before you start
- A configured BentoML service
- Docker running locally
- The service and dependency configuration available in the current directory
Steps
Run bentoml build to package the code, models and dependency configuration into a Bento.
Run bentoml containerize summarization:latest to generate a Docker image.
Run the generated image with docker run --rm -p 3000:3000 summarization:latest.
Expected outcome
A Docker image is generated and started with port 3000 mapped for the service.
Guide limitations
- The recipe documents packaging and starting the example image but does not verify deployment to a particular host or environment.
- Docker must already be installed and running.
Compare options for Model inference and serving
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bentoml | Turn model inference code into a REST API | CLI, Cloud, Docker, Linux | BentoML is available as a public Apache-2.0 Python repository. The documented BentoCloud workflow requires signup and an API token; local use and Docker packaging are described separately. |
| Cloud AI SDK | Adapt and run documented model recipes for computer-vision and NLP inference. | Cloud, Server | The GitHub repository is public. Its public visibility does not establish license terms. |
| Turboquant | Replace a model’s existing inference cache with a compressed cache. | Cloud, Linux, macOS, Self-hosted | The project describes itself as open source. The README documents installation through pip or from a source checkout. |
