Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an Ethereum validator setup needs to query builders and receive relay-aggregated block bids through a dedicated sidecar.
Who it is for
- Ethereum proof-of-stake node operators
- Solo validators
- Teams integrating validator infrastructure into Ethereum deployment tooling
Documented uses
- Source high-MEV blocks from a marketplace of builders.
- Connect validator infrastructure to multiple relays.
- Provide a validator-side component for proposer-builder separation.
- Support monitoring and deployment tooling around MEV-Boost operation.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. Its documentation describes binaries, source builds and Docker images; it also lists Linux, Windows and macOS binaries.
- It is designed for proof-of-stake Ethereum rather than a general blockchain validator workflow.
- It requires coordination with an existing validator stack containing validator, consensus and execution clients.
- One Mev Boost instance can be configured to connect to multiple relays.
- The common documented placement is on the same machine as the beacon client.
- The repository identifies port 18550 as the default port.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Mev Boost from source
Build Mev Boost from the repository and confirm that the command is available.
Before you start
- Go 1.18 or newer
- A cloned copy of the Mev Boost repository
- A stable branch or release tag selected from the repository
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory.
Check out the stable branch, or check out a specific release tag.
Run the command below.
make buildRun
mev-boost -helpto confirm the built command responds.
Expected outcome
A locally built Mev Boost executable with its help output available.
Guide limitations
- This procedure documents building and checking the command only; it does not document relay configuration or a complete validator deployment.
- The repository notes that the develop branch includes ongoing merged pull requests; stable releases or tags are documented separately.
