Practical overview
When it fits
Use Nethermind when you need to operate an Ethereum execution client, connect infrastructure through JSON-RPC, or extend node capabilities without forking the core codebase.
Who it is for
- Ethereum node operators
- Teams building blockchain infrastructure
- Developers extending an execution client through plugins
- Operators working with supported EVM networks and L2 systems
Documented uses
- Run a self-hosted Ethereum execution node.
- Expose Ethereum execution through JSON-RPC over HTTP, WebSocket or IPC.
- Monitor node health and performance using the built-in UI and Prometheus metrics.
- Extend client behavior with plugins.
- Build or operate infrastructure for supported L2 networks.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under GPL-3.0. Documented installation paths include standalone releases, Linux packages, Windows Package Manager, Homebrew, Docker and source builds.
- Choose the deployment path that matches the environment: Linux, Windows, macOS, Docker or source build.
- Review documented system requirements before operating a node.
- The client exposes JSON-RPC over HTTP, WebSocket and IPC.
- Plugin support allows additions such as consensus engines, transaction types, P2P handlers and RPC namespaces without modifying the core.
- Teams migrating from Geth can use the same JSON-RPC API, according to the project documentation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Nethermind from source as a standalone binary
Clone the repository, build the release configuration and run the mainnet client.
Before you start
- A .NET SDK version 10 or later.
- Access to the Nethermind GitHub repository.
Steps
Clone the repository recursively with the command below.
git clone --recursive https://github.com/nethermindeth/nethermind.gitChange to
nethermind/src/Nethermind/Nethermind.Runner.Run
dotnet run -c release -- -c mainnet.Optionally run the documented Nethermind and Ethereum Foundation test suites from
nethermind/src/Nethermind.
Expected outcome
A source-built Nethermind mainnet client is started, with documented test commands available for validation.
Guide limitations
- This recipe does not cover system requirements, consensus-client configuration or production operations.
- The documented source-build prerequisite is .NET SDK 10 or later.
