Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an existing IDA Pro workflow needs an MCP bridge to a language-model client for guided analysis and database annotation.
Who it is for
- Reverse engineers using IDA Pro
- Developers evaluating MCP integrations for binary analysis
- Users of supported language-model clients who want an IDA Pro assistant
Documented uses
- Retrieve binary-analysis information from an IDA Pro session
- Inspect decompilation and disassembly with language-model assistance
- Add comments and improve names and types in an IDA Pro database
- Connect an MCP-compatible client to an existing IDA Pro workflow
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and reports an MIT license. The documented setup requires Python 3.11 or higher, IDA Pro 8.3 or higher, activated idalib, uv and an MCP client; IDA Free is not supported.
- Requires IDA Pro rather than IDA Free.
- Requires an MCP-compatible client alongside IDA Pro.
- The documented bridge is implemented in Python and uses the MCP ecosystem.
- The README recommends the Official Hex-Rays IDA MCP Server instead and says the GUI MCP plugin will eventually be deprecated.
- The project’s documented workflow depends on precise prompting because the README warns about language-model hallucinations.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Ida Pro MCP through a documented client path
Set up the project in Claude Code, Codex or Kimi Code using the repository’s documented installation steps.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or higher
- IDA Pro 8.3 or higher; IDA Free is not supported
- Activated idalib and uv
- Claude Code, Codex or Kimi Code
Steps
For Claude Code, add the mrexodia Claude marketplace, remove any existing ida-pro-mcp plugin, and install it again.
For Codex, add the mrexodia Codex marketplace, remove any existing ida-pro-mcp plugin, and add it again.
For Kimi Code, run the documented plugin installation slash command and reload the client.
For Kimi Code, ensure uv is on PATH; the first session may take longer while dependencies are resolved.
Expected outcome
The selected client has the documented Ida Pro MCP plugin or related idalib MCP server and idapython skill installed.
Guide limitations
- The README recommends the Official Hex-Rays IDA MCP Server instead.
- The Kimi Code path notes a slower first session during dependency resolution.
- The evidence documents installation, not a complete reverse-engineering run.
