Practical overview
When it fits
Use Nanobot when you want to assemble and operate a customizable self-hosted agent rather than use only a browser-based assistant. It is especially relevant when the agent needs tools, memory, MCP connectivity, model routing, scheduled work or multiple chat interfaces.
Who it is for
- Developers building self-hosted personal AI assistants
- Teams creating chat-based operations bots
- Builders designing multi-agent workflows or tool-connected automations
- Users who need persistent memory, scheduled tasks or MCP integrations
Documented uses
- Run a personal AI agent locally or on a server
- Connect an agent to chat applications
- Give an agent tools, long-term memory and scheduled automation
- Delegate work across specialized agents
- Expose an agent through an OpenAI-compatible API
Requirements & limits
Nanobot is identified as open source under the MIT license. The documented installation requires Python 3.11 or newer; stable package installation and source installation are both described.
- Self-hosting is central to the project’s deployment model.
- The framework supports WebUI, terminal, chat channels and an OpenAI-compatible API.
- Tooling includes files, shell, web search, web fetch, cron, image generation and subagents.
- Long-term memory, session history and scheduled automation support persistent workflows.
- MCP, model routing, fallbacks and a Python SDK provide extension and integration paths.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Nanobot and open the first WebUI
Set up the published Nanobot package on a local desktop and reach the initial provider and model settings.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or newer
- A supported local desktop environment
- An internet connection for the documented installer path
Steps
Run the documented macOS/Linux installer or Windows PowerShell installer.
Allow the installer to install or upgrade nanobot-ai from PyPI using its managed environment approach.
On a fresh local desktop, let the installer start nanobot webui.
Open Settings → Models and configure the first provider and model.
Expected outcome
Nanobot is installed and the WebUI is available for configuring an initial provider and model.
Guide limitations
- The documented installer behavior differs for SSH, headless, existing-configuration and older-release paths, which retain the terminal setup wizard.
