Practical overview

When it fits

Use Txtai when semantic retrieval, embeddings, and language-model processing need to be combined in one Python-oriented framework, particularly for applications that may run locally or scale through container orchestration.

Who it is for

  • Python developers building semantic or vector search applications
  • Teams creating retrieval-augmented generation knowledge bases
  • Developers orchestrating language-model pipelines, workflows, and agents
  • Projects needing local or self-hosted information retrieval for AI applications

Documented uses

  • Index and search text, documents, audio, images, and video by meaning
  • Combine vector retrieval with relational data or graph analysis
  • Create RAG processes and other knowledge sources for LLM applications
  • Join language-model pipelines into multi-model workflows
  • Expose applications through web or Model Context Protocol APIs

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies Txtai as open-source under the Apache-2.0 license. The documented framework targets Python 3.11 or later and describes installation through pip or Docker.

  • Its embeddings database combines sparse and dense indexes with graph and relational capabilities.
  • It supports embeddings for text, documents, audio, images, and video.
  • Pipelines cover question answering, labeling, transcription, translation, and summarization.
  • Workflows and agents extend the framework beyond standalone search.
  • Web and Model Context Protocol APIs are documented, with bindings for JavaScript, Java, Rust, and Go.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Create a basic semantic search index

Build and query a minimal Txtai embeddings index using the documented Python example.

Before you start

  • Python 3.11 or later
  • Txtai installed through pip
  • A Python environment

Steps

  1. Import txtai.

  2. Create an embeddings database with txtai.Embeddings().

  3. Index the documented example texts: “Correct” and “Not what we hoped”.

  4. Search the index with the query “positive” and request one result.

Expected outcome

The example returns the indexed item associated with the positive semantic match and its similarity score.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers a minimal in-process example, not deployment or production configuration.
