Practical overview
When it fits
Choose it when an agent project needs a programmable TypeScript runtime and an extensible plugin architecture, especially where application, local-inference, cloud or device layers may be combined.
Who it is for
- Developers building autonomous AI agents.
- Teams extending agent capabilities through plugins.
- Builders creating chatbot, RAG, application or device-oriented agent projects.
Documented uses
- Build an agent directly on the core runtime.
- Add actions, providers, services, model handlers or application views through plugins.
- Run a standalone agent host or developer-facing CLI.
- Use local, direct-provider or optional hosted model paths.
- Package agent applications for supported Linux or Android targets.
Requirements & limits
The repository is publicly accessible and open source under the MIT license. Eliza Cloud is described as optional; no account or pricing details are established here.
- The core runtime is model-agnostic and plugin-extensible.
- Capabilities vary by operating system, installed plugins, permissions and configured providers.
- Local inference requires downloading the relevant assets and suitable hardware.
- The repository includes separate application, runtime, cloud, native and distribution layers.
- Build, verification, test and cloud-mock commands are documented for repository work.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up elizaOS from source
Prepare the repository and start its development process.
Before you start
- Bun and Node versions pinned by the repository's package.json.
- A cloned copy of the elizaOS repository.
Steps
Clone the repository with Git and change into its directory.
Run bun install to install dependencies and prepare submodules, patches and supported host build prerequisites.
Run bun run dev to start the development process.
Expected outcome
The repository development process is started from a locally prepared checkout.
Guide limitations
- The required Bun and Node versions are repository-defined.
- The embedding GGUF is downloaded during local-inference warmup.
- Exact package-level setup is documented in each package's README.
