Practical overview
When it fits
Use Metis when a coding task benefits from repository-aware search, an explicit Plan-to-Build workflow, terminal or desktop execution, and documented verification stages.
Who it is for
- Developers working in repositories or directories
- Teams exploring autonomous coding workflows with planning, implementation, review, and verification stages
- Users who want terminal and desktop interfaces for coding-agent work
Documented uses
- Explain a repository or inspect a specific source file
- Review a Git diff
- Plan and execute coding changes
- Run testing, review, and verification steps within an agent workflow
- Retain project context, learned workflows, and custom checks across sessions
Requirements & limits
The project is public and MIT-licensed. Documented desktop packages target macOS Apple Silicon and Windows x64. CLI installation requires Node.js 22.19.0 or newer; the quick start documents subscription-provider login or API-key configuration.
- Choose the CLI when work is centered on a terminal, repository, file, or Git diff.
- Choose the desktop route when a standalone application with embedded CLI and Server runtime is preferred.
- Consider the Plan and Build split when read-only investigation should precede execution.
- Consider the recursive named-agent design when tasks benefit from separate coordination, planning, implementation, review, and verification roles.
- Consider the documented extension and provider options when model or workflow customization matters.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Metis for terminal use
Set up the Metis CLI and start a coding-agent request in a repository or directory.
Before you start
- Node.js version 22.19.0 or newer
- A repository or directory in which to run Metis
- A subscription-provider login or configured API key for model access
Steps
Install the package globally with npm install -g @wholiver_hu/metis.
Start the CLI with metis.
Run Metis in a repository or directory with a request such as explaining the repository, reviewing a file, or reviewing a piped Git diff.
Use /login for subscription providers or configure an API key.
Expected outcome
The Metis CLI is installed and ready to receive documented repository, file, or diff-review requests.
Guide limitations
- The documented CLI setup requires Node.js 22.19.0 or newer.
- The quick start identifies authentication or API-key configuration as part of the setup.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metis | Explain a repository or inspect a specific source file | CLI, Desktop, macOS | The project is public and MIT-licensed. Documented desktop packages target macOS Apple Silicon and Windows x64. CLI installation requires Node.js 22.19.0 or newer; the quick start documents subscription-provider login or API-key configuration. |
| Llmcode | Inspect a project's directory structure with `/tree`. | CLI | The documented setup requires an API key and supports an API base URL and model setting. The project is open source under Apache-2.0. |
| Klaat Code | Open a project directory for terminal-based coding assistance. | CLI, Server | The README provides a global npm installation command and documents browser sign-in with a KlaatAI account. It also identifies the repository as open source under Apache 2.0. |
