Practical overview
When it fits
Use Foundry when the desired workflow is closer to an autonomous company with departments and coordination than to a single standalone agent.
Who it is for
- Developers exploring autonomous AI teams
- Builders creating digital-company simulations
- Teams prototyping goal-driven multi-agent products
Documented uses
- Turn a strategic objective into delegated, coordinated work
- Run specialized AI roles that collaborate on a shared goal
- Review summarized results and approve important decisions
- Use a TypeScript, NestJS and React foundation for a multi-agent product
Requirements & limits
The repository is publicly accessible and described as open-source under the GPL-3.0 license. The documented local setup uses Docker, Node.js and pnpm; no pricing or hosted-service account requirements are established here.
- Its main abstraction is a ready-to-use AI company rather than low-level agent orchestration building blocks.
- The documented workflow includes a CEO Agent, departments, parallel execution and approval of key decisions.
- The local development stack includes PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, Consul and Nginx managed through Docker.
- The setup has a relatively substantial local baseline: at least 8 GB RAM, 5 GB disk and Docker 20.10 or newer.
- The repository is primarily TypeScript and references NestJS and React.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Foundry for local development
Prepare the documented Docker-backed development environment and start the local services.
Before you start
- A 64-bit Windows 10+, macOS 12+ or Ubuntu 20.04+ system
- At least 2 CPU cores, 8 GB RAM and 5 GB free disk space
- Docker 20.10+, Node.js 20+ and pnpm 10+
Steps
Clone the Foundry repository and enter its directory.
Run
pnpm setup:devto configure the environment, install dependencies, start Docker services, initialize the database and start the development server. After containers are healthy and migrations complete, open the local client UI at
http://localhost:5173.Use the listed local administration, API documentation and monitoring interfaces as needed.
Expected outcome
A locally running Foundry development environment with the client UI and documented supporting services available on their local ports.
Guide limitations
- The first launch is documented as taking 5–10 minutes because Docker downloads approximately 2 GB of images.
- The setup documentation includes default administrator and service credentials; it instructs users to change the default administrator password in production environments.
- This is a documented setup procedure, not an independently verified run.
