Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a research workflow needs repeated, retrieval-grounded prompts across a repository of medical or scientific articles rather than isolated document review.
Who it is for
- Medical researchers
- Scientific researchers
- Developers building private literature-search workflows
- Teams processing indexed paper repositories
Documented uses
- Search an indexed collection of papers
- Generate bulk answers to research questions
- Create reports in Markdown or CSV
- Extract fields from scientific literature using configured prompts
- Annotate answers directly on PDFs when available
Requirements & limits
The project is public, open-source software under the Apache-2.0 license. It is documented for self-hosted use, with installation through pip, GitHub or Docker, and Python 3.10+ support.
- An article repository and indexing stage are part of the documented workflow.
- Paperai relies on databases previously built with paperetl for indexing.
- txtai-compatible embeddings configuration can be supplied through index.yml or a model path.
- Output formats documented by the project include Markdown and CSV.
- A shell is provided for direct queries, while a separate search example displays index results.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Paperai and build a searchable index
Install Paperai, create an embeddings index from input data, and prepare it for queries.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or newer
- An input data path
- Optional txtai-compatible index configuration or vector model path
Steps
Install Paperai with pip, from the GitHub repository, or build the documented Docker image.
Optionally create an index.yml file with txtai embeddings settings.
Run python -m paperai.index with the input data path and optional index configuration.
Start the Paperai shell with the model directory to enter queries.
Expected outcome
A Paperai index is created and available for interactive shell queries.
Guide limitations
- The documented indexing process requires input data and optionally an index configuration.
- Paperai indexes databases previously built with paperetl.
- The guide covers setup and querying, not the contents or quality of any generated answer.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
